What is a R-Value?
A R-value (resistance-value) is a metric used to rate how well a specific type of insulation can resist heat flow. The higher the R-value the warmer the pad.
What is the new ASTM standard?
The ASTM standard introduces a new test for R-value measurement that is being adopted by the camping industry.
In an effort to conform to the new ASTM industry standard while not confusing the current Klymit customer base, Klymit is listing both historical R-values and ASTM R-values on our website and packaging. ASTM R-values will be listed once the pad has been tested.
Have Klymit Sleeping Pads Changed?
No. We understand the introduction of the new ASTM R-value standard is confusing and we apologize for any inconvenience. It is important to note that in over the eight years we have offered insulated pads, there has never been a change in the insulation. All of our insulated sleeping pads are designed and insulated for four season use. Our four-season sleeping pads continue to perform well in cold temperatures as indicated by the many testimonials and reviews you can read online and below.

The Klymit design technology difference
Deep Welds are designed to trap heat underneath your body to keep you warm all night long.
Klymit Static V sleeping pads are intentionally designed with deep welds. The combination of insulation from a sleeping bag and/or quilt and the sleeping pad’s deep welds provides additional warmth and insulation in cold temperatures. This design feature is one of the reasons that Klymit insulated sleeping pads keep you warm in cold winter temperatures but have a different ASTM R rating than before.
Why don’t you suggest R-values for specific temperature ranges?
We don’t suggest specific temperature ranges because every person has different temperature preferences while sleeping. Additionally, our Static V’s deep welds utilize the insulation in your sleeping bag to create extra warmth. These two factors make it difficult for us to suggest specific temperature ranges for specific R-values with a high level of confidence. That being said, all of our insulated pads are recommended for four-season camping and freezing temperatures but how cold you can/should go is highly dependent on your sleeping bag and sleeping pad combo. Give us a call and we’re happy to talk through your specific situation.
“Sleeping on snow and ice can be quite cold, but a sleeping pad that's designed to trap in body heat will help you out in the warmth department. The Klymit Insulated Static V Sleeping Pad is a great option, since it's lightweight and easy to pack, and its design limits air movement and heat loss for both comfort and warmth.” -Travel + Leisure
“I've tried a few sleeping pads but nothing was as comfortable or as warm as this, the lowest I've used it so far is in 30 degrees and I was warm it's like the sleeping pad is a heater, also works great when it's warm outside, the pad is also extremely comfortable, 10/10.” -Dylan on the Insulated Static V
“For the money this is a great pad! I have used it in the winter and stayed warm even when the weather dropped in the single digits F. It is a little heavier than some other pad out there but just by a few ounces. I have had it for two years and it has been a great pad for me!” -Ben R on the Insulated Static V Lite
“Not an ultra light backpacker so a few extra ounces in exchange for comfort, durability and warmth is well worth it. Have taken this pad and multiple cool weather trips so far this year and it hasn't disappointed once. Easy to inflate, deflate and pack it is perfect for quick bedding.” -Jake D on the Insulated Static V Luxe
“Mine just arrived yesterday- Early! With no trips planned I decided to sleep on the deck last night. We live at close to 6800 ft. Temp was in the low 30’s last night and that’s not factoring the windchill. This is my 3rd Klymit pad. I have 2 regular insulated static V’s. I bought this for the extra width and the plush 3.5 inches! My deck is a trek deck. Didn’t sleep in a tent. Coupled with my 15 degree bag I felt nothing but warmth.” -HBLDENALI on the Insulated Static V Luxe SL
“10 on comfort and insulation, i'd give it a 12 as a couple's mattress, no more falling in between, and no bouncing around when one moves. I carry it, she carries some extra stuff, perfect. I'd give it an 8 for folding: kinda hard to make it into a shape that find into your bag well. In the end, when it comes to what matters, aka sleep, it's the best i ever had.” -Ronan C on the Insulated Double V
