Summer camp season is over but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on quality time outside. You can try winter camping for the first time or start with some smaller adventures like a regular winter walk around your neighborhood. We’ve put together a list of ideas of fun ways to spend more time outside once the temperatures drop.
Take Up a Winter Sport
Action sports like skiing and snowboarding are a great way to get outside if you’re lucky enough to live in a snowy location. If you are invested in these sports, a season resort pass is worth the investment for a fun winter escape. But don’t forget about other winter sporting activities like snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and ice skating. You can purchase gear or a lot of communities have awesome rental equipment programs.
Make it a Household Affair
Sometimes it’s easy for everyone to get sucked into the couch during the dark evenings of winter, but before the sun goes down, try heading outside for some snow play time. Have a snowman making contest. Or get your hands into the snow and make some snow forts. Want to get further away from the house? Try sledding at a local park hill. Don’t be afraid to appreciate the little things. Need to shovel the walk? Make it into a game with the whole family. Did it start snowing? Get everyone to put on a jacket and catch snowflakes on their tongues. These small moments outside will hold you over until next time you get the opportunity to sleep outside.
Take a Walk Around the Neighborhood
Getting outside doesn’t mean you need to go on a crazy adventure far up into the mountains. Summer evening walks are a go-to during the warmer months. Continue your walking routine in the winter. Bundle up, grab a hot thermos of tea, and take a lap around the neighborhood to get some fresh cold air. It’s great for a quick break before or after school and work. Talk with your roommate or partner. Or enjoy some solo time listening to music or catching up on your podcast. Even just 5 minutes is a great way to clear the head and spend time outside. What are your favorite things to do outside in the winter?
